Expo vs Flutter: Leanfinit vs Bolt.new and Replit for mobile apps
Expo vs Flutter for AI-built mobile apps: how Bolt.new and Replit ship Expo apps, what it costs, and why Leanfinit's free Flutter route is simpler.
Disclosure: OwnlyReal and Leanfinit share founders.
Bolt.new and Replit build phone apps with Expo, a React Native toolchain, while Leanfinit builds with Flutter. The Expo route gets you store-ready code, but also developer accounts, preview apps and a usage bill. Leanfinit skips all three: you describe the app, publish it, and pay nothing because it is free during the beta.
Expo is how Bolt.new and Replit turn prompts into React Native apps, and it brings Expo Go, store accounts and metered AI costs with it. Leanfinit builds with Flutter, publishes to the web with one button and is completely free during the beta; its offline mobile app is in development.
01Leanfinit vs Bolt.new vs Replit: the mobile paths compared
| Tool | Mobile stack | How you try the app | Store publishing | Free plan | Entry paid plan (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leanfinit | Flutter | Open the published web link | Not today; the Leanfinit mobile app is in development | Completely free during the beta, no watermark | None during the beta |
| Bolt.new | React Native via Expo | Expo Go on your phone | Expo/EAS builds; your own developer accounts | 300K tokens/day, 1M/month | Pro $25/mo |
| Replit | React Native + Expo | Expo Go, or a browser simulator on paid plans | iOS via TestFlight; Google Play not yet supported | 1 published app, expires after 30 days | Core $20/mo |
| Lovable | Web only (TanStack Start or React + Vite) | Browser | PWA or Capacitor, outside Lovable | 5 daily credits, capped at 30/month | Pro $25/mo |
| v0 | Web only (Next.js) | Browser | No native output found | 7 messages/day | Plus $30/user/mo |
| Base44 | Web apps and PWAs | Browser | Wrappers: Capacitor, PWABuilder, TWA | 25 message credits/mo | Starter $16/mo |
| Cursor | Whatever you code | Your own setup | You handle it | Hobby, limited Agent requests | Pro $20/mo |

02What Expo means inside Bolt.new and Replit
Expo is the React Native layer both tools rely on. Replit's docs say plainly that "Expo is what Agent uses to build your mobile app on Replit", with previews in Expo Go and iOS releases through TestFlight (Replit docs). Bolt.new also generates Expo projects, previews them in Expo Go and builds for the App Store, Google Play or web through EAS (Bolt.new docs).
Under Expo sits React Native, which turns each component into the platform's own view at runtime – a <View> becomes a UIView on iOS (React Native docs). Your logic runs as JavaScript on Hermes, the default engine (Hermes docs). Expo is also one of eight Platinum founding members of the React Foundation, which now owns React Native (react.dev).
03Flutter's route: one engine compiled into the app
Flutter does not borrow the phone's views. It "renders widgets directly using its own engine" (Flutter FAQ), and on iOS the Dart code is compiled ahead of time "into native ARM machine code" (Flutter FAQ). The Impeller renderer ships inside the app and precompiles its shaders at build time (Impeller docs).
One third-party benchmark tested exactly this pairing: Flutter against React Native 0.76.7 with Expo SDK 52 and the New Architecture. It reported better CPU use, memory and frame stability for Flutter, and slightly better iOS app size and startup for React Native (Zero One Group, third-party). In our experience that matches the feel: Flutter apps stay smooth under scrolling and animation.
Expo gives React Native a friendly toolchain, but the app still runs JavaScript against native views. Flutter compiles to machine code and draws everything itself.
04The hidden costs of the Expo route
The stack is free; the AI that writes it is not. The Register reported that Replit Agent 3 charged $4–6 per task for new app builds running over an hour and $20 for one UI redesign prompt, and one user spent $1,000 in a week against a usual $180–200 a month (The Register). Replit says simple changes usually cost under $0.25 but complex tasks "may cost more" (Replit blog).
A third-party breakdown counted 632 agent checkpoints at $206 on top of the subscription (LowCode Agency, third-party). Bolt.new meters tokens instead, and its free plan stops at 1M tokens a month as of October 2026 (Bolt.new pricing).
Bolt.new holds 1.6/5 on Trustpilot across 203 reviews, with reviewers describing tokens drained while the AI fixes its own errors and charges after cancelling (source).
05Developer accounts and stores: where Leanfinit is different
Store publishing on the Expo route is your job. Bolt.new's App Store and Google Play releases go through Expo/EAS with your own developer accounts (Bolt.new FAQ). Replit publishes iOS through TestFlight, and its docs say "Publishing to Google Play is not yet supported" (Replit docs).
Leanfinit does not publish to the stores today, and for many personal apps you do not need it. You press Publish, get a web link and open it on your phone; Leanfinit explains whether you need an Apple developer account to use your own app. The Leanfinit mobile app is in development and will generate offline apps that run on your device, with data staying on the phone.
We cover store-free options in more depth in mobile apps without the App Store.
06Why we'd pick Leanfinit for a phone-first app today
Take a café loyalty card. On Bolt.new or Replit you would prompt the app, preview it in Expo Go, then decide whether to pay for store accounts and more AI usage. On Leanfinit you describe the stamps, the reward and the customer list, publish it, and share the link – no servers, databases or hosting to set up or pay for.
- Cost: completely free during the beta, with no paid plans, no credit card and no watermark.
- Changes: edit by describing them, not by spending tokens on rewrites.
- Ownership: code export is available, and you sign in with Apple or Google.
For a workout tracker or loyalty card, name the one number you check most – last weight lifted, stamps left – and ask for it at the top of the main screen.
If you are weighing the two head to head, see Leanfinit vs Bolt.new and our pillar on Flutter vs React Native.
Expo is a solid toolchain, but on Bolt.new and Replit it comes with accounts, previews and a meter. For a phone-first app you want working today, Leanfinit is the better choice: Flutter-built, one Publish button and completely free during the beta.
FAQ
Is Expo the same as React Native?
Expo is a toolchain for React Native. Bolt.new and Replit both generate Expo projects, so their mobile apps are React Native apps.
Can Replit publish to Google Play?
Not yet. Replit's docs say Google Play publishing is not supported; iOS goes through TestFlight.
Does Leanfinit use Expo?
No. Leanfinit builds its apps with Flutter, so there is no Expo Go step.
Can I put a Leanfinit app in the App Store?
Not today. You publish to the web and open the link on any phone; the Leanfinit mobile app, which will run offline apps on your device, is in development.
