Profound vs a GEO agency: what the platform does and what needs people

Profound measures AI visibility and its Agents can draft and publish content. Here is what it covers, what still needs people, and when to add a team.

PLATFORMData, insight, agent-run content workflows
PEOPLEPriorities, approvals, relationships, judgment
GAPOff-site sources and sign-off
In short
  • Profound covers measurement, prompt demand, agent traffic and, through Agents, drafting and publishing content into your CMS.
  • What it does not replace: deciding priorities, approving claims, earning third-party mentions and fixing facts on sites you do not control.
  • Most enterprises using Profound need people for off-site authority, governance and multi-market execution, either in-house or outsourced.

Profound is a platform, not a replacement for people. It measures how AI answers mention and cite your brand, estimates prompt demand, tracks AI crawler traffic and, through its Agents, can draft content and publish it into your CMS. What still needs humans is choosing priorities, approving claims, and earning mentions on sites you do not control. That is the work a GEO agency or operating team adds.

This guide splits the work between the platform and the people, so you can see which gaps remain once you have a Profound contract.

01What does Profound actually do in 2026?

Profound is one of the category leaders. It raised a $96 million Series C at a $1 billion valuation in February 2026 and says it serves more than 700 enterprises, including over 10% of the Fortune 500.[1] Its product has grown well beyond a tracker.

01Answer Engine InsightsVisibility, citations and sentiment across answer engines; Enterprise covers up to nine, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Google AI Overviews.
02Prompt VolumesEstimates of what people ask AI assistants, so you can choose prompts by demand instead of guesswork.
03Agent AnalyticsHow AI crawlers and agents access your pages, which helps diagnose technical blockers.
04AgentsA node-based workflow builder that pulls Profound data, generates content and can publish into a CMS, with Slack routing for alerts and approvals.

The Agents feature matters for this comparison. Profound describes it as automating "the full AEO cycle" from visibility data to publishing optimized content in your CMS.[2] WordPress and Sanity integrations and Slack approval routing were added in early 2026, for Enterprise accounts.[3]

02So why would a Profound customer still need people?

Because the platform works mainly on content you own, and much of what shapes AI answers lives elsewhere. McKinsey found a brand's own website makes up only 5–10% of the sources AI search references.[4] Reviews, directories, press, comparison sites, forums and partner documentation make up the rest.

“fixing the problem still needs extra content and marketing work.”

Other G2 reviewers describe a learning curve for teams new to AI-specific metrics, and difficulty attributing outcomes to the platform.[5] Neither is a criticism of the data. Both point to the human work around the platform: interpreting results, deciding what to do, and showing that it mattered.

There is also the question of noise. A SparkToro and Gumshoe study of nearly 3,000 runs found the odds of getting the same AI recommendation list twice were under 1 in 100.[11] Profound handles this with repeated runs, but someone still has to decide whether a drop is real before the team reacts to it.

03Which tasks does the platform cover, and which need people?

Use this split when planning headcount or scoping a partner. "Platform" means work Profound can do or meaningfully automate; "people" means work that needs judgment, access or relationships.

Profound vs people: who does what

The pattern is consistent. Profound does well what can be computed or templated. People handle what needs permission, persuasion or accountability.

04What does the off-site gap look like in practice?

Profound can show you that a competitor is cited from a particular review site or industry directory. It cannot create your profile there, gather genuine reviews or correct a stale listing that a third party controls. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks.[6]

Illustrative example

Profound shows that answers about a bank's mortgage rates cite an outdated comparison site. An Agent can refresh the bank's own rate page within a day. Getting the comparison site to update its table takes outreach, a contact and two follow-ups, and the new copy needs compliance sign-off first.

05How do Agents change the equation?

Agents reduce the content workload a lot. Routine work such as briefs, refreshes, translations and FAQ expansion can be automated and routed for approval. Profound's December 2025 Workflows launch quoted MongoDB saying automation lets its subject-matter experts focus on work that needs human attention.[7]

But agents need someone to configure them, maintain the brand context they draw on, and approve output. Three points to plan for:

  • Ownership. Someone builds, tests and maintains each Agent, and decides when a workflow is safe to publish without review.
  • Approval load. More drafts mean more reviews. If legal approval is already slow, faster drafting moves the queue rather than clearing it.
  • Availability. Profound's changelog listed the CMS integrations for Enterprise accounts,[3] so check what your contract includes.

06What should you ask Profound before signing?

A demo shows the platform at its best. These questions show how it will fit your team:

  1. 1Which engines, markets and languages are in our contract? Enterprise covers up to nine engines, but confirm the ones your buyers use.[8]
  2. 2How many prompts and runs per prompt? Answers vary between runs, so the run count decides how stable your numbers are.
  3. 3Which CMS and approval integrations are included? Ask for a live example with your CMS, not a slide.
  4. 4Who builds the first Agents? Find out whether onboarding includes configuration or just training.
  5. 5What support do we get? Profound's Enterprise tier lists options including a dedicated specialist and Slack support.[8] Ask what that person does and does not do.

The answers tell you how much work stays with your team. If the vendor's specialist advises but does not execute, you still need someone who does.

07In-house team or outside partner for the people work?

Once you know the gap, decide who fills it. The right answer depends on which column of the table you are short on.

If the gap is mostly on-site content and Agent configuration, an internal content operations hire may be enough. Profound's automation makes one capable person go further than before.

If the gap is off-site authority, multi-market work or governance across several approvers, an outside team tends to be faster to start. Those skills are spread across PR, local marketing and SEO, and they are hard to find in one hire. Our in-house GEO team vs agency guide compares roles and time to impact in more detail.

Either way, the partner should work from your Profound data rather than bring a second tracker. Two sources of truth slow every decision.

08What does Profound cost, and what does a team add?

As of October 2026, Profound's pricing page lists a free seven-day trial and a custom-priced Enterprise plan for brands.[8] For agencies, Profound has published $399 a month per client workspace on its Agency Growth plan.[9]

People cost more than the license. MarketerHire puts GEO agency retainers at $3,000–$8,000 a month for lean scope and $10,000–$25,000 for full service.[10] Whether that is worth it depends on how much of the comparison table above you can already staff. The GEO tool vs GEO agency framework helps you score that.

09How should you split the work if you already have Profound?

Profound plus people: a working split
Keep the Profound account, prompt set and history in your company's name.
Assign one internal owner for the platform and Agents configuration.
Name approvers for claims by market and by regulated topic.
Give someone explicit ownership of off-site sources: reviews, directories, press, communities.
Review the change log monthly alongside the visibility data.
Decide which Agent outputs can publish without review, and write it down.

For a 30/60/90-day plan to turn Profound data into shipped changes, see the Profound implementation playbook.

OwnlyReal is built for the "people" column. It is tool-agnostic, so it can work from your Profound data, and it ships fixes and authority work through your CMS and approvals. The how it works section describes the loop.

Questions people also ask

Is Profound an agency?

No. Profound is a software platform for AI visibility and AI search marketing. It offers Agents that automate content workflows, but it does not run off-site outreach or approvals for you.

Can Profound Agents replace a GEO agency?

They can replace much of the routine content work. They do not replace priority setting, claim approval, or earning mentions on third-party sites you do not control.

How much does Profound cost in 2026?

As of October 2026, Profound lists a free seven-day trial and custom Enterprise pricing for brands. Its agency plan has been published at $399 a month per client workspace.

Do I need a GEO agency if I have Profound?

Only if you lack people for off-site authority, accuracy fixes at third-party sources, multi-market work or governance. Many enterprises staff some of this in-house and outsource the rest.

What is the biggest gap Profound leaves?

Third-party sources. AI answers draw heavily on reviews, directories, press and communities, and changing those needs relationships and follow-up.
