Perplexity not citing your website? How to get cited again
Why Perplexity cites other sites instead of yours: how it retrieves and cites, PerplexityBot vs Perplexity-User, CDN blocks, and what to change first.
- Perplexity searches the web in real time and cites what it retrieves, so if PerplexityBot cannot reach your pages, you cannot be cited.
- Check robots.txt, your CDN or WAF bot settings, and server logs for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User before changing any content.
- Once access is clear, win citations with direct answer pages, fresh facts, and corroboration on the communities and sites Perplexity already cites.
If Perplexity is not citing your website, start with access, not content. Perplexity answers by searching the web in real time and citing the pages it retrieves, so a blocked crawler, a CDN bot rule or a missing index entry removes you before quality is ever judged. Once access is confirmed, citations come from pages that answer the exact question plainly and are corroborated elsewhere.
This guide explains how Perplexity retrieves and cites, how to check whether its crawlers reach you, and what to change on and off your site. If the issue is broader than one engine, start with why ChatGPT doesn't mention your brand.
01How does Perplexity choose which websites to cite?
Perplexity describes its own process in three steps: it interprets the question, searches the internet in real time, and returns a summary in which each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources.[1] Unlike a model answering from training data, it depends on what its retrieval can find at query time.
That makes the citation decision a retrieval problem first and a writing problem second. Your page has to be in Perplexity's index, has to match one of the searches it runs for the question, and has to state the answer clearly enough to be quoted.
02Which Perplexity crawlers need access to my site?
Perplexity documents two user agents, and they behave differently.[2] Knowing which is which keeps security and marketing from arguing past each other.
| Agent | Purpose (per Perplexity) | Robots.txt | IP list |
|---|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results; not used to crawl content for AI foundation models | Respects it | perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json |
| Perplexity-User | Visits a page when a user's question needs it | Generally ignores it, since a user requested the fetch | perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json |
If PerplexityBot is disallowed, your pages cannot enter the index that citations come from. Perplexity recommends allowing it, and advises WAF rules that combine user-agent matching with IP verification against its published ranges, refreshed automatically.[2]
PerplexityBot, by Perplexity's own description, is a search crawler, not a training crawler. Many enterprises blocked "AI bots" as a group in 2024–2025 and removed themselves from Perplexity's citable index without intending to. See our AI crawler guide for every major bot.
03Could my CDN or firewall be blocking Perplexity without anyone knowing?
Yes, and this is common in large organizations where security owns the edge. In July 2025 Cloudflare said every new domain on its network would be asked whether to allow AI crawlers, with blocking as the starting default.[3] Marketing teams often learn about such settings only when citations disappear.
There is also history behind the caution. In August 2025 Cloudflare reported that, when blocked, Perplexity appeared to use undeclared crawlers to fetch content anyway, and it removed Perplexity from its verified bots list.[4] Whatever your view of that dispute, it means some security teams treat Perplexity traffic with suspicion, and rules written then may still be live.
- 1Read robots.txt as a bot wouldFetch /robots.txt on every hostname, including regional and docs subdomains. Look for Disallow rules under PerplexityBot or a catch-all.
- 2Check edge bot settingsAsk whoever runs your CDN or WAF for AI-crawler, bot-fight and challenge rules. Challenges block bots just as effectively as a 403.
- 3Grep server or CDN logsSearch for the PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User user-agent strings over the last 30 days. Note status codes, not just hits.
- 4Verify the IPsMatch requests against Perplexity's published JSON ranges, so you allow the real bot and not impostors.
- 5Re-test a known answerAsk Perplexity a question only your page answers. If it cites you after the fix, access was the problem.
04What if logs show PerplexityBot getting errors?
Status codes tell you more than hit counts. A run of 403 or 429 responses usually means a security rule or rate limit, while 5xx errors point to origin capacity, often on heavy pages that time out for bots. A redirect chain into a geo-selector or a cookie consent wall can also leave the crawler with nothing useful to index.
Fix these with the team that owns the edge, not with a content brief. Agree an allow rule tied to Perplexity's published IP ranges, document it, and add it to the change checklist so the next security review does not quietly undo it. Edge settings are code; they need an owner and a test, like any other release.
It is also worth checking regional sites separately. Large brands often run country sites on different stacks or CDN accounts, and one market can be blocked while the main domain is open. That shows up as citations in English but none in, say, German or Arabic.
05What content does Perplexity tend to cite?
After access, the question is whether your page is the best retrievable answer. Large citation studies show Perplexity leans heavily on community and reference sources. Profound's analysis of 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 found Reddit was 6.6% of all Perplexity citations, the largest single source on that platform.[5]
That does not mean your site cannot win. It means your page competes with discussion threads and reference pages for the same question. Pages that win tend to share a few traits, which we discuss in more depth in the sources AI trusts:
06Why does Perplexity cite a competitor or a forum instead of us?
Usually because they answer the question as asked and you answer a different one. Run the exact prompt and read the pages Perplexity cites: their headings, the sentence it quoted, and how recent they are. That is your brief.
Look at the gap honestly. Competitor pages often state a specific, dated fact where yours offers a positioning line; forums often answer the follow-up question your page skips, such as limits, exceptions or real prices. Perplexity quotes sentences, not brand promises, so give it a sentence worth quoting.
Then decide whether to improve your own page, or to strengthen the third-party sources already cited. If a Reddit thread or a comparison site holds the answer, a factual, disclosed response there can matter more than another blog post on your domain. Our guide to Reddit's role in AI answers covers how to do that without manipulation.
A software company asks Perplexity "Does [product] support SSO on the standard plan?" and sees a two-year-old forum thread cited instead of its pricing page. The pricing page shows SSO only as an icon in a comparison grid. Adding one plain sentence and a dated plan table gives Perplexity something quotable.
07Does freshness matter for Perplexity citations?
Because Perplexity retrieves at query time, what is live and indexed now is what it can quote. A page updated last week can be cited this week, which is good news when you fix something, and bad news when an old page with a wrong figure is still easier to find than the new one.
Two habits help. First, keep one canonical page per important fact (pricing, availability, eligibility, leadership) and update it in place rather than publishing a new post each time. Second, retire or redirect superseded pages instead of leaving them live, so retrieval cannot pick the stale version. One current page beats five partly outdated ones.
08How do I keep Perplexity citations once I have them?
Treat Perplexity as one surface among several, measured on the same prompt set and cadence as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. Citations move as sources change, so re-test monthly and after every major site or CDN change. Tie the work to an owner who can change both content and infrastructure; that cross-team gap is what OwnlyReal's operating model is set up to close.

Questions people also ask
Does Perplexity respect robots.txt?
Perplexity says PerplexityBot respects robots.txt. Perplexity-User, which fetches pages when a user asks a question, generally ignores robots.txt because the fetch is user-initiated.
Is PerplexityBot used to train AI models?
Perplexity states PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
How do I check if PerplexityBot is crawling my site?
Search your server or CDN logs for the PerplexityBot user-agent string, check the response codes, and verify request IPs against Perplexity's published perplexitybot.json list.
How long until Perplexity cites my site after I unblock it?
Perplexity does not publish a timeline. Because it retrieves in real time, changes can show quickly once pages are indexed; re-test the same prompts weekly and log results.
Should I block Perplexity-User to protect content?
Blocking it at the edge means Perplexity cannot open your page when a user's question needs it, which can cost you citations. Decide with legal and security, knowing the visibility trade-off.
