Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand? A diagnosis tree

ChatGPT never mentions your brand? Work through four checks in order: crawlable, corroborated, entity-clear, and in the right prompt space. Fixes for each.

FIRST CHECKCan the engine even reach you?
In short
  • When ChatGPT never mentions you, the cause is usually one of four: blocked crawlers, too few third-party mentions, an unclear entity, or the wrong prompts.
  • Check them in that order; each check is cheap, and fixing a later one is wasted if an earlier one fails.
  • Third-party mentions correlate with AI visibility far more strongly than backlinks in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands.

If ChatGPT doesn't mention your brand at all, work through four checks in order. Can it reach your site (crawler and CDN access)? Do other sources talk about you (reviews, press, lists, communities)? Is it sure who you are (consistent name, descriptors, structured data)? Are you testing the prompts buyers actually use? Most total absences fail one of the first two.

This guide is for complete absence. If you rank well on Google but still lose AI recommendations, read why page-one rankings don't guarantee AI answers instead.

01Is it really zero, or just this one run?

Before diagnosing anything, confirm the problem. AI answers vary a lot between runs: SparkToro and Gumshoe found that the same prompt returned the same brand list less than once in a hundred runs.[1] One empty answer proves little.

Run each buyer question several times, logged out, in each market and language that matters, and log the results. Our manual audit protocol explains how. If you appear in some runs, your problem is share of answer, not absence.

You would not be alone if the answer is truly zero. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, about 26% received no mentions at all in Google's AI Overviews.[2]

02What is the diagnosis tree?

Each branch below is a yes/no question. Fix the first "no" before moving on, because later fixes depend on earlier ones.

Why a brand is missing from ChatGPT answers: check in this order

03Branch 1: Can ChatGPT reach your website?

ChatGPT's search features rely on a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that to be eligible for ChatGPT search, a site must allow OAI-SearchBot and its host or CDN must allow OpenAI's published IP addresses.[3] Sites that block it won't appear in ChatGPT search answers.[4]

This is easy to get wrong without meaning to. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate bot; blocking GPTBot to opt out of training does not block search, but a blanket rule for all OpenAI agents does.[4] And in July 2025 Cloudflare moved to blocking AI crawlers by default for the sites it serves, so a CDN setting nobody in marketing chose can make you invisible.[5]

Crawler access checks
robots.txt does not disallow OAI-SearchBot (check each subdomain and language folder).
CDN or bot-management settings allow OpenAI's search crawler IP ranges.
Key pages render their main text in HTML, not only after client-side scripts.
No login, geo-block or cookie wall hides product and pricing pages.
Bing can index the site; ChatGPT search also uses third-party providers such as Microsoft.

The last item matters because OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to partner search providers, naming Microsoft among them.[3] For bot-by-bot detail, see GPTBot blocked in robots.txt.

04Branch 2: Does anyone else talk about you?

This is the most common failure for established companies with good websites. Answer engines lean heavily on what third parties say about you, not just what you say about yourself.

In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions had a correlation of 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks.[2] Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged about ten times more AI Overview mentions than those in the next-lower quarter.

That study covered Google's AI Overviews, but ChatGPT-specific data points the same way. SE Ranking's analysis of 129,000 domains found that domains with profiles on several review platforms averaged 4.6 to 6.3 ChatGPT citations, against 1.8 for those absent from them.[6]

The fix is not more blog posts on your own domain. It is earning accurate mentions on the review sites, directories, comparison lists, trade press and community threads that cover your category; our guide to the sources AI trusts maps them.

05Branch 3: Does the engine know who you are?

A model can know about you and still not mention you if it is unsure which entity you are. This happens with generic names, names shared with another company, recent rebrands, or a parent brand and product brand that are described differently across the web.

Check whether your name, one-line description, category, headquarters and leadership read the same on your site, LinkedIn, Wikidata or Wikipedia where applicable, review sites and major directories. Google's documentation notes that Organization structured data helps it "disambiguate your organization," and that the sameAs property can list your profiles elsewhere.[7]

01One canonical nameUse the same legal and brand name pattern everywhere, and state former names explicitly.
02One descriptorA short, consistent sentence on what you are and for whom, repeated across profiles.
03Linked profilesOrganization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles and listings.
04Rebrand bridgeA page that says plainly what you used to be called and when it changed.

06Branch 4: Are you testing the prompts buyers actually use?

Teams often test the prompt they wish buyers used, such as their own product category name, when buyers ask something broader or more specific. If your prompt set is wrong, absence may be an artifact of the test.

Rebuild the prompt set from real sources: sales call notes, support tickets, site search logs and search queries. Include category prompts ("best X for Y"), comparison prompts ("A vs B"), problem prompts ("how do I fix Z") and local-market variants. Then re-run.

If you appear for some prompt types and not others, the gap is content: you have no page, and no third-party page, that answers that question well.

07Could it simply be model memory?

Sometimes. Answers that do not trigger a web search come from what the model learned in training. OpenAI lists GPT-5's knowledge cutoff as September 30, 2024,[8] so a brand that grew after that date may be missing from memory even if it is well covered online today.

You cannot speed up a model's next training run. What you can do is make sure that when the engine does search, it finds you, which brings you back to branches 1 to 3.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: the invisible market leader. A regional manufacturer leads its niche but never appears when buyers ask ChatGPT for suppliers. The audit finds its CDN blocks AI crawlers, it has no profiles on the industry directories ChatGPT cites, and its products appear under a distributor's name on most third-party sites. Each fix is mundane; together they explain the absence.

08Which fixes are usually a waste of time?

When a brand is absent, teams often reach for the most visible lever first. Some of these levers do little for a total absence.

Publishing more blog posts on your own domain rarely helps if the engine can't reach the site, or if nobody else corroborates what you say. Adding an llms.txt file is another popular step; SE Ranking's 129,000-domain study found it had negligible impact on ChatGPT citations.[6] And rewriting your homepage for keywords treats the problem as classic SEO when the gap is usually off-site.

Paid tactics carry their own risk. Fake reviews, undisclosed sponsored posts or invented community personas may produce short-lived mentions, but they create legal exposure and tend to be removed. The durable fixes are slower and plainer: access, corroboration, clarity and relevant content.

09What should you do first?

Start with an evidence log, not a content plan. Record the prompts, engines, runs and results, then walk the tree and note which branch fails. That log becomes your baseline for measuring progress.

If the work spans many markets, languages and teams, an operating partner can run the loop for you. OwnlyReal measures share of answer across engines, fixes issues at the source and builds off-site authority through your own CMS and approvals; see how it works.

Questions people also ask

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand?

Usually one of four reasons: its search crawler can't reach your site, few trusted third-party sources mention you, it isn't sure which entity you are, or you are testing prompts buyers don't actually use.

How do I check if ChatGPT can access my website?

Make sure robots.txt and your CDN allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP ranges, and that key pages render text without scripts or logins.

Will blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from mentioning me?

Blocking GPTBot opts content out of model training. Search visibility depends on OAI-SearchBot, which is separate, but blanket rules or CDN settings can block both.

How long until ChatGPT starts mentioning my brand?

Search-based answers can change after sources are recrawled; memory-based answers wait for new model versions. There is no fixed timeline, so measure with repeated runs over time.

Does adding an llms.txt file help?

There is little evidence it does. SE Ranking's study of 129,000 domains found llms.txt had negligible impact on ChatGPT citations.
