Brand not showing in Gemini? Google-specific causes and fixes
Why your brand is missing from Google Gemini answers, how Gemini differs from ChatGPT, the Google-Extended trap, and what to fix in Search, Maps and on-site.
- Gemini grounds many answers in Google Search, so weak Google signals, missing entity data or a Google-Extended block can keep you out.
- Blocking Google-Extended does not affect Google Search, but Google says it does control grounding in Gemini Apps.
- Fix crawl controls first, then entity data, Business Profile, answer-first pages and corroborating sources; re-test Gemini separately from ChatGPT.
If your brand is not showing in Gemini, check your Google signals before your content. Gemini grounds many answers in the Google Search index, so a page Google cannot use, a missing or confused entity, or a robots.txt rule blocking Google-Extended can keep you out. Google says Google-Extended does not affect Search, but it does control grounding in Gemini Apps. Fix crawl controls, entity data and Business Profile, then publish answer-first pages.
This guide covers what makes Gemini different from ChatGPT, the most common causes of absence, and the order of fixes. For a cross-engine diagnosis, start with why ChatGPT doesn't mention your brand.
01Why does Gemini matter for brand visibility now?
Scale. On Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings call in July, Google reported the Gemini app at 950 million monthly active users, and said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users.[1] For many buyers, Gemini is also built into Android, Chrome and Workspace, so it is where questions get asked without anyone opening a search page.
02How is Gemini different from ChatGPT when it comes to brands?
The main difference is where the facts come from. Google documents that, through grounding with Google Search, the model decides whether a search would improve the answer, generates one or more queries, and composes a response from the results, with citations.[2] Gemini Apps can show a Sources button with related links, though Google notes not every response includes them.[3]
So Gemini leans on Google's own index and entity understanding, while ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and partners. A brand can be strong in one and missing in the other. Gemini also has privileged access to Google properties: in June 2026 Google announced Gemini integration with Google Business Profile for managing reviews, questions and hours.[4]
| Gemini | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Live web retrieval | Grounding with Google Search [2] | ChatGPT search via OAI-SearchBot [5] |
| Opt-out control that affects answers | Google-Extended (training and Gemini Apps grounding) [6] | OAI-SearchBot (search answers) [5] |
| Entity source of truth | Google Knowledge Graph, Knowledge Panel | Web sources and its own index |
| Local business facts | Google Business Profile, Maps [4] | Web sources, listings |
| Referral tracking | AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics [7] | utm_source=chatgpt.com [8] |
03Could robots.txt be blocking us from Gemini?
This is the most overlooked cause. Many companies added Google-Extended to robots.txt to opt out of AI training, assuming it was harmless because Google says it does not affect Search inclusion or ranking.[6] That part is true.
But Google's documentation also says Google-Extended controls whether crawled content may be used for grounding in Gemini Apps and in Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI.[6] In other words, a training opt-out can also remove your pages from the live sources Gemini draws on when it answers.
If your robots.txt disallows Google-Extended, Gemini Apps may not ground answers in your pages, even though you rank in Google Search. Some CDN-managed robots.txt features also add Google-Extended to their block lists. Decide deliberately with legal, knowing the visibility trade-off. Our AI crawler guide covers every major bot.
There is a second wrinkle. Because Google-Extended is a control token, not a separate crawler, you will not see "Google-Extended" in your server logs; crawling happens with normal Google user agents.[6] The only way to know is to read robots.txt itself, on every hostname, including regional and documentation subdomains that may have been set up by different teams.
04What are the other common reasons a brand is missing from Gemini?
Entity confusion deserves special attention on Google surfaces. Organization structured data helps Google disambiguate your organization in search results, using properties such as legalName, sameAs and identifiers like leiCode.[9] Our guide on when AI confuses your company with another covers the full fix.
05Does strong Google SEO guarantee Gemini visibility?
No. Ranking well gives Gemini a chance to find your page when it searches, but the answer is composed from several results, and the page that ranks first is not always the page that gets used. A competitor's page that states the answer in one clear sentence can be preferred over yours if yours buries it under marketing copy.
Prompts also differ from keywords. A buyer may ask Gemini a long question with constraints such as budget, location and use case, and the searches Gemini generates for it may not be the head terms your SEO team tracks. Map the questions, not just the keywords, and check which of your pages would answer each one directly. Our comparison of Google rank and AI answers explains why the two diverge.
06How do location and local questions work in Gemini?
For questions with a place in them, Google's local data carries extra weight. Google's June 2026 announcement positions Gemini as an assistant with access to a business's reviews, customer questions and performance metrics through Business Profile.[4] For multi-location brands, each location's profile is part of how Gemini can describe you, so outdated hours, missing categories and unanswered questions are visibility problems, not only local SEO housekeeping.
07How do I test whether my brand appears in Gemini?
Use the same discipline as any AI audit. Write 20–30 real buyer questions, run each several times in fresh chats, and record whether you are mentioned, whether facts are correct, and which sources Gemini shows. Test AI Overviews and AI Mode separately: they share Google's index but are different products.
Look closely at the sources Gemini shows when you are absent. They tell you which pages Google considered better answers for that question, and whether the gap is your page, a review site, a directory or a competitor. That list becomes your work plan.
Run tests in each market and language you sell in, and from a signed-in account without personal context where possible. Gemini results for a German question asked in German are their own dataset; do not assume English results generalize.
08What should we fix first to show up in Gemini?
- 1Check crawl and grounding controlsWeek 1Review robots.txt on every hostname for Google-Extended and Googlebot rules, and confirm key pages are indexed in Search Console.
- 2Clean up the entityWeek 1–2Add Organization schema with legalName, sameAs and identifiers. Claim the Knowledge Panel or file feedback with sources.
- 3Complete Google Business ProfileWeek 2For location-based brands, update categories, hours, attributes and answer customer questions. Respond to reviews.
- 4Publish answer-first pagesWeek 2–6For each priority question, put a plain, specific answer near the top of a page that already ranks or can rank.
- 5Corroborate off-siteOngoingMake sure reviews, directories, press and partner pages state the same facts. Grounded answers cross-check sources.
- 6Re-test monthlyMonthlyRe-run the same prompts in Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Track referrals via the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics.
A hotel group appears in ChatGPT answers for "family resorts in Ras Al Khaimah" but not in Gemini. Its robots.txt, set by the security team a year earlier, disallows Google-Extended. After a reviewed decision to allow it, plus Business Profile clean-up, the team re-tests the same prompts monthly to see whether Gemini starts citing its pages.
09Is Gemini accurate about brands once it does mention them?
Not always, and that is a separate risk. In a September 2025 test by the UK consumer group Which?, Gemini scored 69% and the Gemini AI Overview 70% on 40 consumer questions across finance, legal, health and consumer rights, ahead of ChatGPT and behind Perplexity.[10] The same test caught other tools in clear errors; ChatGPT and Copilot, for instance, failed to correct a wrong ISA allowance planted in a question.[10] No engine is immune, so audit accuracy on every surface where your buyers ask. Being present is step one; being described correctly is step two. Our guide to AI Overview errors covers the correction route on Google surfaces.
10Who should own Gemini visibility?
Gemini visibility should not be a separate project from your other AI work. Use the same prompt set, the same fact sheet and the same reporting, with Gemini as one column. In most enterprises, Gemini sits between SEO, local, web and brand teams, and robots.txt sits with security. Visibility depends on all of them agreeing. OwnlyReal works as one owner across these surfaces, measuring share of answer per engine and shipping fixes through your CMS and approvals, as described in how we work.
Questions people also ask
Why does ChatGPT mention my brand but Gemini doesn't?
They use different retrieval. Gemini grounds in Google Search and Google's entity data, while ChatGPT search uses its own crawler. Check Google-Extended, indexing and your Knowledge Panel first.
Does blocking Google-Extended hide my site from Gemini?
It can. Google says Google-Extended controls whether content may be used for training and for grounding in Gemini Apps, while it does not affect Google Search inclusion.
Does Google Business Profile affect Gemini answers?
For local and location-based questions, Business Profile is a core Google source, and Google announced Gemini integration with Business Profile in June 2026. Keep it complete and current.
How do I track traffic from Gemini?
Google Analytics added an AI Assistant channel in 2026 that groups referrals from assistants including Gemini. Pair it with a lead-source option in your CRM.
Is ranking well in Google enough to appear in Gemini?
It helps but is not sufficient. Gemini must be allowed to ground in your pages, understand your entity, and find a clear answer it can use.
